How much desiccant does a gun safe need?

Desiccant packs vs. an electric dehumidifier rod
A golden rod warms the air inside the safe so moisture is less likely to condense. It works, but it needs a permanent power feed, which usually means drilling the safe body or running a cord past the door seal — and it does nothing during an outage.
A desiccant pack removes the moisture instead of heating it. There's nothing to wire, nothing to break, and nothing to leave running. The tradeoff is honest: a pack saturates eventually and has to be recharged. Ours goes in the oven and comes back out ready to work, which is why plenty of owners run both — a rod for the ambient load, packs inside the ammo cans and cases where a rod can't reach.

How do I keep a gun safe dry?
Lower the humidity inside it. Put a desiccant pack sized to the safe's interior volume on a shelf or the floor of the safe, keep the door closed, and recharge the pack when it saturates. Avoid storing firearms in a safe that sits directly on a cold concrete slab — that's a condensation source.
How much desiccant do I need for a gun safe?
Use 1 pound per 13.3 cubic feet of enclosed space. A 32 oz pack is 2 lbs and covers about 26.5 cubic feet. Most full-size safes need 1–2 medium packs.
Will Sta-Dri damage bluing, wood stocks, or optics?
No. The pouches are safe for direct contact. The fill is pure montmorillonite clay with no additives or free-flowing chemicals, so there's nothing to leach onto a finish.
Can I put desiccant packs in ammo cans?
Yes, and it's one of the better places for them. Ammo cans seal tightly, so whatever humidity was in the air when you closed the lid stays there. Two small packs handle a standard can.
How often do I need to recharge it?
It depends on your climate and how often the safe is opened — anywhere from a couple of months to a year. Recharge it in a conventional oven and reuse it — up to three cycles per pack. Full recharging instructions.
Is this better than a golden rod dehumidifier?
It's different. A rod needs power and warms the air; a desiccant pack needs no power and removes moisture. Packs also work inside cases and ammo cans where a rod can't reach. Many owners use both.
